The Privilege of Agency

And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

Even before we make a decision on whether to move our little finger to either the left or right, the neurons involved are already firing messages to the muscles of that finger, anticipating the outcome. Because of this, scientists are currently arguing that free will is only an illusion, and that our decision are all for-ordained based on our hereditary and biological makeup.

In reality, free will is at the core of our understanding of how the whole of the universe functions. Love is not just something that has evolved so that we can manipulate others to get the best for ourselves. Instead of being self-serving, true love gives freedom. My salvation is not dependent on what God thinks of me. Instead my salvation is only dependent on me choosing to love God.  We all need to make the decision. Who will I choose to follow?

The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love.
