How to Read the Bible (part 3) – The Importance of Genre
Pr Christopher Petersen
Our bible is much like a library – it contains books not only from the pen of many different authors, but in many of the styles and categories we find in current day libraries. Whether it be historical narrative, poetry, parable or law, identifying the book’s genre helps us understand and dig deeper into what God is telling us as we read His word.
A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their riddles.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:5-7
I Love to Tell the Story – Lyrics by Katherine Hankey in 1866, Tune composed by William G. Fischer in 1869
